Individuals with dyslexia struggle with reading. Writing, spelling, comprehension and writing fluency and mathematical calculations despite having average to above average intelligence .
Dyslexia is a Specific Learning Disability . Dyslexia causes difficulties in reading& writing , which primary is due to deficit of phonological processing ability . Phonological processing ability is the ability to manipulate sounds in words.
Specific Learning Difficulties is often characterized by difficulties with accurate and fluent word recognition , spelling and decoding commonly known as DYSLEXIA.
Specific Learning Disability ( e.g Dyslexia ) impacts specific cognitive processes related to language processing not due to intellectual disability or any kind of sensory impairment.
While the exact meaning of Dyslexia means difficulty with reading, difficulty with writing is known as Dysgraphia and difficulty with mathematical concepts and calculations is known as Dyscalculia. An individual with Specific learning Difficulty may have any one kind of difficulty or any combination of these difficulty/and or difficulties listed above. Every learner with dyslexia may have a different profile.
Dyslexia is a Hidden Disability as it does not have any obvious physical features of disability. While dyslexic individual may appear verbally proficient they may lack skills top perform well in academics such as reading etc . It is visible in the impact it has on reading or and writing skills etc . It can also have less visible impact on information processing and working memory .
This impacts the amount of information that someone can remember and the speed with which they can recall and access information already stored in brain .
In adults difficulties encountered in reading, writing and spelling may be hidden many may have coping strategies to deal with their difficulties but these skills may require more effort and time than the general expected ones . Avoidance may also help to camouflage the challenges .
Dr Arundhati Sarkar is the Founder-Director of Anjali Dyslexia Association Kolkata & Anjali Educational. She was the Former Director, Manochetna Academic and Research Centre, a wing of Manovikas Kendra ( joined at the very inception of the unit in 2012)
